Just wanted to share some photos of all of our snow...we've had some very snowy winters over the past 10 years, but none like this! We literally have nowhere to put all this snow. The snowbanks are so high that shoveling the snow over them is becoming virtually impossible. Thankfully, we've had lots of help from neighbors with snowblowers, but we're not out of the woods yet. The forecast is calling for another plowable snowstorm Saturday night, with another one to follow next Tuesday/Wednesday.

I purchased a cheap set of three mercury glass votives from our school PTA fundraiser, and they definitely added a nice little bit of (cheap!) sparkle to my Thanksgiving table.

Rhodes College has been rated number one among the “Most Service-Minded Schools” in Kaplan/Newsweek’s “Finding the Right College for You” guide. Of the 510 schools evaluated, 25 colleges made the cut with Rhodes at the top of the list.

The 2010 guide includes 25 colleges listed in 12 categories exploring different aspects of the undergraduate student experience.

Over 80 percent of Rhodes students participate in community service. Through the Rhodes Fellowships Program, students put academics into action while participating in important study, research, creative work and service initiatives.

This commitment to service began to grow in the 1950s with the establishment of the Kinney Program and is based on volunteerism, leadership and civic engagement. In addition, Rhodes has the oldest collegiate chapter of Habitat for Humanity in the country. Shaved Ice is the New Lemonade

Apparently, lemonade stands are passe ... shaved ice is all the rage, or so says Damon. He bought a shaved ice machine from a customer in North Carolina, and it's been the hit of the summer! He and the girls set up this stand at the end of the street and made a small fortune selling these sweet, icy treats.

Overnight in Boston

We met up with our friends Bo and Lara for an overnight stay in Boston recently. We took a horse-drawn carriage ride from Faneuil Hall and took a harbor cruise with stops at George's Island and Spectacle Island. The girls also made their acting debuts in a mini-production of Tom Thumb on George's Island.

This picture is from our recent trip to Florida to visit Nora and spend a few days at Disney. The girls loved the Nora's farm and we spent a fun day canoeing at Rainbow River (one of Nora's favorite places!). We also made our first trip to Disney and visited Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. It was a great trip despite the fact that we drove, straight through, both ways. Next time, we'll definitely be flying!

Let's see....it's been a month since my last post. I'm not sure how April went by so fast, but I couldn't be happier about the arrival of spring. It's getting very green here, thanks to the freakishly warm weather in April (three days over 90 degrees!) You can't let a hot day in April go by without getting out the mammoth water slide, pictured below. OK, actually, DAMON can't let a hot day in April pass without getting the water slide out. If it were up to me, I'd pack this thing up and take it straight down to Kara and Ben's house.

I was also busy getting ready for my friend Lorin's wedding in Asheville, NC. Damon and I escaped sans kids for two days to attend...it was truly one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever been to, and for that matter, could ever imagine. There's some good financial news out there, finally! According to the National Association of Realtors, home sales are picking up as people are cashing in on low home prices and low mortgage rates. Industry experts seem to think that we're pretty much at the bottom now, with 2009 seeing a modest increase in home sales, followed by more substantial increases in 2010. The median home price may continue to decline this year, but experts expect prices to begin increasing in 2010. In other words, this is the year to make a move if you've been considering it!

"An NAR index that tracks housing affordability rose to a record level in January. This was because the combination of mortgage rates, family income and home prices in January were "the most favorable since tracking began in 1970," according to the group ... The NAR also forecasted that existing home sales would rise 0.3% this year, then 5.8% in 2010. The median price would fall 4.9% this year, but rise 3.9% in 2010. New home sales would be down over 39%, with the slowdown in building and the need to trim inventory. But the median price for new homes would drop only 3% this year, then rise 4.2% in 2010. All these facts, figures and forecasts point to one thing. If people find good value and a good mortgage rate on a home they love, this is the year to buy.

It wasn't that hard to spot positive signs, although neither Wall Streeters nor the media seemed to pay much attention. Consumer spending rose in January, as did personal income. In fact, after-tax, inflation-adjusted income has now gone up three straight months. No one thinks consumer spending will explode, but the worst may be over in that department. Meanwhile, the personal savings rate increased to 5% in January, its highest level since 1995.

This time around, the bad week in stocks gave us a good week in bonds, so the benchmark 10-year Treasury's price went up. Its yield, which runs counter to price, went back down below the 3% threshold, settling at 2.823%. The mortgage rate situation continues to be very very appealing."

Cranberry Scones

This is a recipe that I got from Martha Stewart Living a few years back. The original recipe called for apricots and fresh sage, but I usually substitute cranberries or blueberries. These are easy and delicious!

Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1 cup fresh or dried cranberries
1 cup heavy cream, plus more for brushing
Sanding sugar, for sprinkling

Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Work in butter with fingertips or a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in dried apricots and sage. Add cream; gather mixture with your hands until it starts to hold together.

Turn out mixture onto a lightly floured work surface. Quickly bring dough together; pat into an 8-inch circle that is 1 inch thick. Smooth top with a rolling pin. Cut into 8 wedges with a bench scraper.

Arrange wedges on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush tops with cream; sprinkle generously with sanding sugar. Bake until cooked through and golden brown, about 30 minutes. Immediately transfer to a wire rack; let cool at least 10 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature. Scones can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1 month.

I am completely fed up with our cable/internet/phone service provider: Comcast. First of all, they have a monopoly on local service...why is that OK? Anti-trust laws don't apply here? Rachel Ray's Pasta e Fagioli

This soup is so easy, quick and delicious. Perfect for a cold winter night (or when you need to use your new dutch oven).

INGREDIENTS
4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), plus some for drizzling
4 thick slices pancetta, about half-inch thick each, diced
2 sprigs rosemary
4 sprigs thyme with several sprigs on it
1 large fresh bay leaf or 2 dried bay leaves
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 small carrots, finely chopped
4 rib celery, finely chopped
6 large cloves garlic, chopped
Coarse salt and pepper
2 15-ounce cans cannellini beans, or small white beans, drained
6 cups chicken stock
1/3 pound ditalini (small tube pasta)
Grated Parmigiano or Romano, for the table
Crusty bread, for mopping

PREPARATION
Heat a deep pot over medium-high heat. Add EVOO and pancetta.
Brown pancetta bits lightly and add herb stems, bay leaf, chopped vegetables and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Add beans and stock to the pot, and raise heat to high.
Bring soup to a rapid boil and add pasta. Reduce heat to medium and cook soup, stirring occasionally, 6-8 minutes or until pasta is cooked al dente. The rosemary and thyme leaves will separate from stems as the soup cooks; remove the stems and bay leaf from soup.
Place the pot on the table on a trivet so the hot pot does not burn your table. Let the soup rest and cool for a few minutes. To serve, ladle soup into bowls and top with lots of grated cheese and another little drizzle of EVOO. Pass crusty bread at the table for bowl mopping.

Winter Break

Yes, I know, it's been two weeks since I've updated my blog, but, in my defense, it's been a very busy two weeks.

Here are the highlights of our Christmas holiday vacation: Emma lost her very first tooth on Christmas Eve (Emma asked, "Do you think Santa and the Tooth Fairy already know each other?) and another tooth a few days later, we had a fun visit with "Nana Hannah from Atlanta," and, later in the week, a visit from Aunt Rene and Josh. Emma, Sophie, Josh and Damon hit the slopes, and Sophie skied on her own (albeit, on the bunny slope) for the first time!

We're ready for a REAL vacation now.

This is an email from my good friend, Erin. It's a special story any time of the year, but especially a week before Christmas...

"My cousin Brian has been in dire need of a double lung transplant for quite some time. Last Friday, Brian called me to tell me about a dream he had. He told me that our Grandma and Grandpa (in heaven for over 10 years now), visited him in his sleep. They both hugged him. Brian said he felt this hug in his sleep, and could feel it all the next day. Apparently this happened from time to time, and always was followed by something positive for him.

On Sunday night, Brian received a call from the hospital, telling him that they had a possible match. I was lucky enough to be with Brian and his partner Ed during this time. We drove him to the hospital, but we found out 3 hours later that the lungs were infected, and the surgery was a no-go. Needless to say, this was devastating to him and to the rest of my family.

On Tuesday morning, Brian was on his way back in for another possible match. MGH has done only a couple of lung transplants this year...so for 2 matches to occur in 2 days is nothing short of a miracle. After about 12 hours of surgery, I just heard that Brian is done, and will soon be in recovery. He will be in an induced coma for several days, so this is just the beginning of a long road.

I ask that you keep Brian in your thoughts and prayers. He is an amazing person, and his spirit touches everyone that he meets. We all hope and pray that this is the beginning of a new life for him, and we are all saying our thanks to my Grandparents, who seem to be looking out for him."

Finally, it's beginning to feel like Christmas. We got our first snowflakes today, and just like that, winter has arrived. The wind is howling tonight and the wind chill is supposed to drop below zero overnight. It's funny how the New England seasons change so suddenly.

This year we gave in and let the girls put up a small tree in their playroom. Here are pictures of them decorating it. Notice the ketchup stains on the BACK of Sophie's shirt. When she stains her shirt, she simply turns it around so she can't see it. Classic Sophie.

Kids Coop Theater Presents "Believe"

We went to see the Kids Coop Theater production of the Christmas play, "Believe," this afternoon. I'm always impressed by how early kids develop talent and care about giving back to their community! It's definitely inspiring. Here's the Derry News article about the play, written by my once-colleague, Julie Huss.

A season to 'Believe' in Kids Coop

More often than not, this time of year puts much talent on the local stages, not only showcasing the sights and sounds of the holidays in dance, song or theatre, but also giving the audiences and supporters of the arts a chance to reach out and do something good for those in need.

One local youth theatre group, Kids Coop Theatre, continues its mission of bringing quality theatre to the stage and kicks in a bit of holiday spirit, too.

The group's holiday show, "Believe," is being presented on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m., Dec. 6 at 1 and 7 p.m., and Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Adams Memorial Opera House in downtown Derry.

In addition to presenting the show, Kids Coop will give back to the community for all who have supported Kids Coop through the years.

"We decided to do two productions this fall, because of the huge interest in our show," said Bridget Detollenaere, Kids Coop board of directors member. "'Believe' was added to our schedule as an age-alternative to our recent teen production of 'Oklahoma.'"

"Believe" producer is Ken Neu, who said the show was meant to be a lower budget, easier set production to put on the stage, but it has become so much more than that.

"It has become a great way for the KCT kids to give back to the community that has been so supportive of Kids Coop Theatre," he said.

Neu and his production team have planned ways to help this holiday season, including a giving tree to benefit the Love Makeover Ministry and a free performance on Dec. 4 for families and individuals who are unable to buy tickets. A bookfair event was held at Barnes and Noble book store on Nov. 9 to benefit the Sonshine Soup Kitchen and First Baptist Church food pantry. All who attend this weekend's performances of "Believe" are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the soup kitchen and food pantry.

"There are lots of surprises, laughter and joy," Neu said. "Christmas songs you all remember, some you may have forgotten and some performed with a whole new twist."

Performances of "Believe" are this weekend, Dec. 5, 6 and 7 at the Opera House. Tickets at $8 are available at Daren's Music in Derry, Allen Motors in Derry, or online at www.kids-coop-theatre.org. The show is sponsored by Allen Motors.

Well, it's not like I'm having a BLAST or anything, but time is definitely flying by. I can't believe it's only two and a half weeks until Thanksgiving. It seems like this school year just started. Speaking of the holidays, Thanksgiving will be a special one this year: all four Smith girls & husbands will be together for the holiday. I'm hosting dinner for the whole motley crew, and fully intend to play dumb and trick Nora into doing all the cooking.

What an exciting day to be an American! The lines at our local polling place were out the door; something I've never seen since I moved back to my relatively small hometown eight years ago.

According to CNN, 73.5% of all eligible Americans are registered to vote, and election officials are expecting 80% turnout: a number that hasn't been seen since women got the right to vote! I'd call that a thriving democracy!! No matter who's side you're on, you've got to feel good about that.

TV Anchor in Arkansas Dies of Beating Wounds

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A local television anchorwoman found savagely beaten in her home last week died of her wounds on Saturday night.

The death of the anchor, Anne Pressly, was announced by her parents through St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center. On Friday, it had been reported that Ms. Pressly was somewhat improved, although still in critical condition and unable to communicate verbally. Her doctors had described themselves as “guardedly optimistic” that she would recover.

“It was our hope, as was yours, that Anne would overcome the injuries inflicted upon her in the brutal attack at her home,” her parents, Patricia and George G. Cannady, said Saturday in the hospital’s news release. “We were with her in her last moments, and although our hearts are broken, we are at the same time comforted by our faith knowing that Anne is now with our heavenly father.”

Ms. Pressly, 26, was discovered by her mother, who went to her daughter’s home in the prosperous Pulaski Heights neighborhood when Ms. Pressly failed to answer a routine wakeup call. Ms. Pressly appeared on the “Daybreak” program on KATV, the ABC television affiliate here.

Mrs. Cannady had been visiting Little Rock from her home in Pawleys Island, S.C., when the attack occurred.

The police said Ms. Pressly sustained trauma to her face, head and neck during what they believe was a robbery in her home. Detectives have said they have no evidence that Ms. Pressly had been singled out or stalked. A credit card belonging to Ms. Pressly was used at a service station several miles from her residence shortly after Mrs. Cannady discovered her daughter, the police said.

Ms. Pressly was a native of Greenville, S.C., and a political science graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis. She had been employed by the station since 2004 after serving several technical and editorial internships there.

Ms. Pressly appears in an uncredited role in the Oliver Stone film “W,” based on the presidency of George W. Bush. Mr. Stone awarded her a 30-second part when he reportedly noticed her physical resemblance to the conservative commentator Ann Coulter when Ms. Pressly visited the set of the film, in nearby Shreveport, La., to prepare a feature story on the production.
